Detail Itinerary
Day 0: Arrival · Transfer to Moshi
Arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) and transfer to your hotel in Moshi. Your mountain guide will meet you in the evening for a detailed briefing, gear check, and final preparations. Rest well — the adventure starts tomorrow.
Day 1: Londorossi Gate – Mti Mkubwa Camp
Your Northern Circuit adventure begins at Londorossi Gate, entering Kilimanjaro's lush equatorial rainforest. The trail winds beneath an emerald canopy rich with bird life, colobus monkeys, and the scent of tropical flora an exciting, spirit-lifting first day on the mountain.
Elevation: 2,100m → 2,750m | Distance: ~7 km | Hiking Time: 3–4 hrs | Vegetation: Rainforest Zone
Day 2: Mti Mkubwa – Shira 1 Camp
The forest yields to open heather and moorland as you ascend toward the vast Shira Plateau — one of Kilimanjaro's most photographed landscapes. Broad views open up dramatically and the air carries the clean, cool scent of high altitude for the first time.
Elevation: 2,750m → 3,610m | Distance: ~8 km | Hiking Time: 4–5 hrs | Vegetation: Heather & Moorland
Day 3: Shira 1 – Shira 2 Camp
A gentle, rewarding traverse across the Shira Plateau — the remnant of Kilimanjaro's oldest volcanic caldera. The pace is deliberately unhurried, perfect for acclimatization and absorbing the otherworldly landscape. Expect exceptional photography conditions throughout the day.
Elevation: 3,610m → 3,840m | Distance: ~9 km | Hiking Time: 4–5 hrs | Vegetation: Moorland / Plateau
Day 4: Shira 2 – Lava Tower – Moir Hut
Today's classic acclimatization day pushes you to Lava Tower at 4,600m — giving your body valuable time at altitude — before descending to Moir Hut to sleep. The "climb high, sleep low" principle is one of the key reasons this route achieves its exceptional summit success rate. Views toward the summit glaciers begin in earnest.
Elevation: 3,840m → 4,600m → 4,200m | Distance: ~10 km | Hiking Time: 6–7 hrs | Vegetation: Alpine Desert
Day 5: Moir Hut – Buffalo Camp
This is where the Northern Circuit earns its name. You leave the popular southern routes entirely behind and enter the serene, rarely-trekked northern slopes of Kilimanjaro. The views reach across the savanna into Kenya, and the silence is extraordinary. Few climbers ever see this face of the mountain — you are among the privileged.
Elevation: 4,200m → 4,020m | Distance: ~9 km | Hiking Time: 4–5 hrs | Vegetation: Northern Alpine Zone
Day 6: Buffalo Camp – Third Cave Camp
A steady, meditative trek with sweeping valley panoramas on either side. This section of the Northern Circuit remains gloriously quiet — you are unlikely to cross another climbing group all day. The landscape shifts subtly as you arc around the eastern flank of the mountain, the summit cone looming ever larger above.
Elevation: 4,020m → 3,870m | Distance: ~9 km | Hiking Time: 4–5 hrs | Vegetation: Semi-Alpine
Day 7: Third Cave – School Hut
Anticipation builds as you ascend to School Hut — the quieter equivalent of the busy Barafu Camp used by southern routes. At this altitude, the world is reduced to rock, sky, and glacial silence. Your team will brief you on tonight's midnight summit push. Rest as much as you can — the greatest challenge of your life begins in hours.
Elevation: 3,870m → 4,750m | Distance: ~8 km | Hiking Time: 5–6 hrs | Vegetation: Arctic Zone
Day 8: Summit Day – Uhuru Peak – Mweka Camp
The climb begins around midnight under a sky blazing with stars. You ascend slowly through biting cold and thin air, guided by headlamp and your experienced team. As dawn breaks, the immense crater rim appears — and then, finally, Uhuru Peak at 5,895m, the highest point on the African continent. After celebrating at the summit, you descend the Mweka Route through alpine desert and moorland to camp.
Elevation: 4,750m → 5,895m → 3,100m | Distance: ~20 km | Hiking Time: 12–16 hrs | Summit Day
Day 9: Mweka Camp – Mweka Gate
After breakfast, a final descent through lush green rainforest brings you back to Mweka Gate where families of colobus monkeys bid you farewell. Collect your hard-earned Kilimanjaro National Park summit certificate. A hot celebratory lunch and transfer back to your Moshi hotel complete one of the greatest adventures on earth.
Elevation: 3,100m → 1,640m | Distance: ~10 km | Hiking Time: 3–4 hrs | Vegetation: Rainforest
